Normal Hats For Commonplace Women by Glimja Normal Hats For Commonplace Women by Glimja
These are normal female hats in Joseon dynasty.

The best feature are
that they were made with from cheap material
and that emphasized practicality than beauty.

Satgat : for men and women. conical. made from reeds.

Jeonmo : especially for lower class like Gisaeng. umbrella shaped. made from oiled paper.

a head scarf : it's form varied in different localities.

Any woman could use this,
but most people thought that it's a little indecent to wear Jeonmo.
You know - women can show their face more than using Jang-ot and Sseugae-chima :)
So noble ladies preferred to use other hats or over garments.

I learned that Satgat were mostly farming folk... and the idea of assasins wearing them everywhere dressed in black was a sham that sageuk made up. *cough* cue my disappointment.... Looks good on film, but not the reality...

Well, it's very simple.
If assasins wear all black clothes and black satgat,
the WHO DOESN'T KNOW that they are the assasins? X) haha
It's just used to help TV viewer to know which is the villains, not the reality ^^

I didn't know satgat was for both men and women.
The most known is jeonmo I think... because of gisaeng. :P
The head scarf is the first time I see it. Was it used by women for working in fields? or maybe for another purpose.
Anyway, another good search! Thanks for sharing!

Your guess is right.
They usually use head scarfs in working.
And Jeonmo is loved by many low-class women, not only gisaeng ^_^

I see. ^^
I guess Jeonmo of gisaeng was a little biy more refined than the "casual" Jeonmo.
